Wreaths are a traditional symbol of the holidays. A wreath that’s a little untraditional can make a great gift from the garden–like this fresh herb wreath.
The wreath pictured above is the “Cooks Herb Wreath” by Williams-Sonoma. This beautiful creation is made from fresh culinary herbs, including bay, sage, rosemary and oregano. It ships fresh, and your gift recipient can hang it in the kitchen for a source of fresh (and eventually dry) herbs for many months!
While the Williams-Sonoma wreath is gorgeous in its own right, it is a bit pricey (and unfortunately already out of stock for the season.) But worry not! You can create your own herb wreath with fresh herb clippings from the garden.
To make your own herb wreath, you’ll need a wire wreath frame (like this one from Save-”On-Crafts). Clip your herbs. This will work best when coming from well-established herb plants. You’ll be better able to fill in the wreath the longer the clippings are. Use florist’s wire to tie bunches of herbs to the wire frame, overlapping the bunches so no wire or frame is visible. Make sure the herb bundles are facing the same direction. It’s best to start at the top and work around clockwise, laying each bundle over the last one.
If your herb garden was less than prolific this year, use fresh herbs from the grocery store to build one. Although by the time you’re done buying enough herbs, you probably could have just purchased the wreath from Williams-Sonoma!
