The flavors of Thanksgiving are so familiar and welcoming. While you’re putting the big meal together, you might be using dried herbs from your spice cabinet. It’s interesting to know that all the holiday flavors can grow right in your own herb garden!
The herbs used for Thanksgiving are a pretty short list which makes up the ubiquitous “poultry seasoning”. The bottle of the mysterious powder in my kitchen cabinet lists the ingredients as: thyme, sage, marjoram, rosemary, black pepper and nutmeg. Thyme and sage are the most predominant flavors, and easy to grow. Marjoram is less familiar, but still home-growable. Rosemary is, of course, an herb garden staple. You can even grow black pepper and nutmeg at home!
While it’s a little close to the holidays to start growing these herbs for Thursday’s feast, keep them in mind as an herb garden idea for next Thanksgiving. Since they’re all perfect for poultry, you can also use them on chicken all year-round. Grow them inddors or out, them mix in a flavor proportion you like to make your own home-grown poultry seasoning.
