Kids’ Summer Garden

When school is out for summer, it’s not long before kids grow bored with hanging around the house. Give your children a fun gardening activity that will give them something to do all summer.

Container gardening is an easy way to set up a new garden for your little ones. One way to make the garden more kid-friendly (and really capture their interest) is to use old toys as the containers for the garden.

Go through your child’s toybox and take out any toys that are old or damaged. Playthings, like a dump truck, beach pail or an old wagon, can be filled with soil to create individual containers that carry on a toy theme. If you don’t have enough toys to use, buy plastic pots and have your kids paint the exteriors to personalize them for a summer kids garden..

  1. Another great kid- friendly activity your readers would enjoy is to grow a TickleMe Plant from seeds and then watching the plant MOVE when Tickled! As a first grade teacher I no longer plant Lima beans, as the growing of this interactive plant, proved to be much more exciting and educational for my student’s.
I found my supplies for a classroom kit at the TickleMe Plant website but they also sell individual greenhouses and even party favors, with everything you need to grow your own TickleMe Plant from seeds. I assure you your kids will be more excited about gardening, and its just fun to watch the expressions of the faces of children (and even adults) when they see the plant close its leaves and droop when tickled.
