You can show your patriotism in your clothes or how you decorate the home, how about in the garden? Consider planting a combination of red, white and blue flowers for a patriotic ensemble in your garden this Memorial Day.
A patriotic flower garden is all about combining these vibrant colors. Red and white flowers are the easiest to find, but flowers that have a dark blue color like the American flag can be more challenging to locate. Generally the blue seen in flowers is a lighter blue, not a navy blue, so feel free to use dark purple flowers for a dark blue effect.
For a consistent look throughout the flower bed, petunia, impatiens, lobelia, verbena, pansies and bachelor’s buttons can be found in all three colors. Here are some other options.
- Red: Dianthus, poppies, geraniums, hydrangeas, zinnias, begonias, chrysanthemums
- White: Clematis, geraniums, salvias, mums, snapdragons, daisies
- Blue: Grape hyacinth, morning glory, ageratum, blue bells
While you can’t go wrong with red, white and blue, your garden will look more uniform if you choose plants of the same approximate height so all flower colors are visible.
