Amaryllis Care

December 20, 2010 |  by  |  Plants

The beautiful, bright blooms of an amaryllis are a welcome sight during the cold, dark days of winter. This cheery holiday plant traditionally produces large, trumpet-shaped blossoms in shades of white, pink and red during the coldest time of year.

Sometimes called the belladonna lily, amaryllis are tropical bulb plants, and they don’t do well in cold weather. Keep your potted amaryllis indoors until temperatures break in the spring. Make sure they receive bright light and even water.

Caring for amaryllis during its blooming and growing seasons is just like caring for many other indoor plants. To ensure your amaryllis reblooms for the next holiday season, bring the plant outdoors in springtime and place it in a sunny location for the growing season.

During its dormant season, however, is when things get interesting.Bring the plant back indoors before fall frost, place in a cool location, and (despite your gardening inclinations) do not water it for two months. After the two-month dry spell, move the plant will to a warm location and begin watering as normal. Your amaryllis will begin to grow again and bloom.

  1. When I lived in the northern US, I’d grow bulb plants indoors during the winter months. Amaryllis was one of my favorite plants!

  5. I’ve just been given an amaryllis as a Christmas present. The thing I like about bulb plants is that it always seems like a miracle when they grows from something that looks dead.

  6. I bought an amaryllis in December 2009 and bloomed beautifully. By March 2010 I cut it back because the stems grew lanky. So, I placed it in a corner of the room. It did not bloom in 2010 so I thought it was a “goner” as my family tries desperately to keep me away from plants. Two days ago I noticed that the bulbs were sprouting green again. It has continued to grow at least 2 inches a day. What should I do? It is in a rock container. I’m afraid to water it for fear of it dying. Please advise what I should do. I love the way this plant looks.!

    • It sounds like your amaryllis is following a natural pattern of growing in spring. People often hold them in the dormant stage longer just to have blooms for the winter holidays, but the plant doesn’t require forced dormancy. Don’t give it too much water, but don’t dry out the soil either. I’d give it about 1/4 cup weekly, only if the top of the soil feels dry. The soil should be consistently moist, but you don’t want a lot of water getting to the roots right away while they’re still developing. You can move it out of the corner to bright indirect light also to get it blooming. Best of luck!
